What it costs
What leak detection costs in Phoenix
The short answer: a locate is priced by how much has to be ruled out before the leak has an address. Here is what moves that, and what the range looks like.
A leak locate on a Phoenix property usually lands in the low-to-mid hundreds, and the repair is quoted separately once the leak has been found. These are estimates for the Phoenix market, not a quote. The reason nobody can give you an exact figure over the phone is that the price follows how many things have to be eliminated, and that is not knowable until somebody has heard what your water is doing.
What we can do on the phone is tell you which of the situations below yours sounds like, and roughly what that involves. Call (602) 830-9717 or text a photo to the same number.
The market
Is Phoenix an expensive place to have this done?
No — and that is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.
The federal government publishes what the trade earns in every metro. In the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler area there are about 9,270 plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, and the median wage is $63,750 a year against $63,800 nationally. Phoenix sits level with the country, not above it.
That matters because labour is the largest input in a locate. A market paying the national median for the trade should not be producing prices well above the national picture, and if you are quoted something that looks nothing like the range below, it is fair to ask what is different about your job.

What you can expect
Ranges by job
Estimated ranges for the Phoenix market. Your property decides where in the range it falls, and we will tell you before we come out.
| Job | Range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Pool or spa leak locate | $185 – $375 | One vessel, equipment on and off, dye where it is needed. A spa tested separately is additional work. |
| Slab leak pinpoint | $250 – $500 | Isolating the failed line and marking the point. Access and floor covering move this more than anything else. |
| Irrigation or underground line | $185 – $435 | Length of run and depth decide it. Caliche makes a long run slower to work. |
| Water main locate | $250 – $500 | Meter to house. A run under a driveway or a mature tree is the difficult case. |
| Repair | Quoted after the locate | Quoted once the leak is located, because until then nobody knows what is involved. |
These ranges are our estimate of the Phoenix market and are not a quote. Call for a figure for your property.
Why two jobs differ
Five things that decide the number
- How many things have to be ruled out. A pool with one obvious suspect is a shorter visit than a property where the loss could be the pool, the irrigation or the supply line.
- Whether the spa is on the same system. A spa often has to be isolated and tested on its own, which is a second test rather than a longer one.
- What is over the pipe. Marking a point under gravel is not the same job as marking one under travertine, stamped concrete or a finished floor.
- Access to the equipment pad and the shut-offs. If the valves are reachable and labelled, isolation is quick. If they are buried or unlabelled, finding them is part of the work.
- Ground conditions. Caliche and hardpan carry water sideways, so the wet patch is often nowhere near the leak and more of the run has to be worked.
What happens if it turns out not to be a leak
You get told that, and you are not sold a repair you do not need. In a Phoenix summer a sound pool can lose more than a third of an inch a day to evaporation alone, which is why the bucket test is worth running before anybody drives out — it costs you a bucket and ten minutes, and it sometimes ends the conversation there.
Why the repair is quoted separately
Because until the leak has an address, nobody knows what the repair involves. A fitting that can be reached is a different job from a line under a slab or a driveway. Quoting a repair before the locate would be guessing, and the guess would have to be high.

A photo of the wet patch, the equipment pad or the bill is usually enough for us to say what is likely going on.

Questions about cost
What does leak detection cost in Phoenix?
A locate usually lands in the low-to-mid hundreds depending on how much has to be ruled out. A single pool vessel is the shorter end; a property where the loss could be the pool, the irrigation or the supply line takes longer. The repair is quoted separately once the leak has been located.
Why will nobody give me an exact price on the phone?
Because the price follows how many things have to be eliminated, and that is not knowable until someone has heard what your water is doing. What you can get on the phone is which situation yours sounds like and roughly what that involves.
Is leak detection more expensive in Phoenix than elsewhere?
No. Federal wage data for the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro puts the plumbing trade's median wage within a hundred dollars of the national median, so this is an ordinary-cost market rather than a premium one.
Do I pay if you do not find a leak?
The locate is the work, whatever it concludes. Sometimes the honest answer is that the pool is sound and the weather is doing it, and that answer is worth having - it stops you paying for a repair you do not need.
